ODM is the route many new beauty and supplement brands actually take, even when they call it something else. Instead of developing a formula from scratch, you start from a ready formula that has already been developed and tested, then customise it to fit your brand. This guide explains how working with an ODM ready formula skincare manufacturer or a supplement ODM partner works, how far customisation can go, and when ODM is the right choice.
ODM stands for Original Design Manufacturer. The manufacturer, or its development team, holds a library of products it has already designed: formulas, often with suggested packaging and supporting technical documents. A brand selects from that library, adapts it, and sells it under its own name.
The key difference from OEM is where the design starts. In OEM, the brand’s specification drives the formula. In ODM, an existing design is the starting point. Private label sits at the lightest end of ODM, with little or no change to the product. For the full comparison, see OEM vs ODM vs private label.
A ready formula has usually been through lab development, stability checks in at least one packaging type, and production before. That gives you practical advantages: you can test real samples early, you know the formula is producible at scale, and there is existing technical information, such as the ingredient list and specifications, to support registration.
Typical ODM libraries in beauty and wellness cover:

“Ready formula” does not mean “identical product”. Most ODM projects include some customisation, which typically falls into these levels:
| Customisation level | Examples | Effect on development |
|---|---|---|
| Brand only | Your label and packaging on the existing formula | Lightest |
| Sensory tweaks | Scent, colour, flavour (supplements), texture adjustment | Light; usually a short sampling round |
| Ingredient adjustments | Add or swap a hero ingredient, change a concentration within permitted ranges | Moderate; a new stability check may be needed |
| New variant on a proven base | A brightening and a hydrating version from one base | Moderate; many markets need a separate registration per variant |
Every change to the formula can affect stability, the ingredient list on the label and the registration file, so your partner should tell you which changes need re-testing before you commit to them.
Supplement ODM follows the same logic, but the constraints are different. The format — capsule, tablet, powder, gummy or liquid — decides which ingredients and doses are practical. A gummy limits how much of an ingredient fits in one piece, and some actives affect taste or texture. Flavour masking, sugar content and serving size are common customisation points.
Claims are the other big difference. Supplement claims are tightly regulated in most markets, and many only accept wording from an approved list or with registered evidence. A ready formula registered in one country does not automatically qualify in another. Read more in private label supplements step by step and private label gummy vitamins.

| Option | What it affects | Cost impact |
|---|---|---|
| Formula used as is vs. customised | Sampling and re-testing | Lower / medium |
| Premium actives or higher concentrations | Raw material per unit | Medium to higher |
| Stock packaging vs. custom moulds | Unit cost, one-time tooling | Lower / higher |
| Number of variants or shades | Registrations, minimums per variant | Higher with more variants |
| Order quantity | Unit cost | Larger runs usually lower per unit |
Minimums start low for proven formulas and stock packaging; the exact MOQ depends on the product and packaging and is confirmed in your quotation. Background in understanding MOQ.
ODM is usually a strong fit when:
A custom (OEM) formula is usually the better route when the formula itself is your competitive advantage, when you need exclusivity, or when your brief cannot be met by adjusting an existing base. Ready formulas are generally non-exclusive: other brands may use the same base, so your differentiation comes from customisation, packaging and brand story. Many brands combine both routes: ODM for supporting products, custom work for the hero.
Before you start, clarify:
Common mistakes: picking a formula from a list without testing samples on your target customers; requesting so many changes that the project becomes custom development without the budget or schedule to match; assuming claims used elsewhere are acceptable in your market; and choosing packaging that has not been tested with the formula.
5FINE offers ready formulas across skincare, body and hair, makeup, supplements and fragrance, developed and produced with certified partner factories in Thailand, Korea, Japan and Dubai. We help you choose a base, customise it, select packaging and prepare registration and export paperwork. Start with Start your brand or see our formula development service.
ODM starts from an existing design or formula; OEM starts from the brand’s own specification. In practice many projects mix both, using a proven base and adjusting it to the brief.
Usually yes. Scent, colour, texture, flavour and some ingredients can be adjusted. Bigger changes may need new stability checks and can affect registration in your market.
Ready formulas are generally non-exclusive. If exclusivity matters to your positioning, discuss a custom formula or a substantially modified version with your partner.
Yes, but doses, ingredients and claims must fit each destination market’s rules. Confirm with the authority or your importer before finalising the label.
