"What's your MOQ?" is one of the first questions every founder asks — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's how minimum order quantity really works and how to keep your first order lean.
MOQ is the smallest quantity a manufacturer will produce in one run. It exists because setup — formula batching, filling lines, printing packaging — has fixed costs. Below a certain volume, a run simply isn't economical to make.
MOQ depends on the product and the packaging. A simple lip balm may start low; a custom airless serum with printed cartons sits higher because each component has its own minimum. Packaging, not formula, is often what drives MOQ up.
Choose stock packaging instead of fully custom moulds for your first run. Launch one or two hero SKUs rather than a full range. Use a private-label or semi-custom base to avoid development minimums. Each of these lowers your entry quantity.
A lower per-unit price at a huge MOQ is no bargain if it ties up your cash in unsold stock. Order what you can realistically sell in your first few months, then reorder once you have traction.
There is no single MOQ — it depends entirely on your product. At 5FINE, MOQ starts from around 1,000 units and we'll give you an exact figure per SKU so you can plan your launch with confidence.
