Private label vs. full ODM: which fits you?

"OEM or ODM?" is the first real decision every beauty founder faces. The right answer depends on your budget, your timeline, and how different you need to be.

Private label (fastest)

You brand an existing, proven formula. Lowest cost, lowest risk, quickest to market — often weeks. The trade-off is differentiation: competitors can use the same base. Ideal for testing a market or launching a first SKU.

Semi-custom (the sweet spot)

Start from a proven base and adjust scent, color, texture, or active levels. You get meaningful differentiation and a recognizable formula without the cost and timeline of full development. Most growing brands live here.

Full ODM (most distinctive)

A formula developed to your brief from the ground up. Highest differentiation and full ownership of your product story — but higher MOQ, cost, and lead time. Best when your formula is your competitive advantage.

How to decide

Match the model to your stage: validate with private label, scale with semi-custom, and invest in full ODM once you know exactly what your customers want. A good partner lets you move up the ladder as you grow — which is how we structure every 5FINE engagement.
